Kinja'd!!!

I was talking to my parents about Christmas and got onto what I wanted. I’ve been wanting a tablet for a while since it’ll be pretty useful. She had already ordered one intending to surprise me but it’s an off brand low power one which isn’t really what I need.

I asked to return it and pay the difference to get what I want (Nvidia Shield) but it’s a bit of a faff on and honestly I think she’s bummed out she didn’t get to surprise me with it. I told her I’m genuinely appreciative of the thought (I am) but it just isn’t useful to me.

First world problems I know but I just wanted a little rant about it.

As someone who has suffered the agony of a £50 knock off tablet, I fully get you. I have a rule regarding gift giving in my family. Do NOT get me any technology under any circumstances. The end result is track days, track days, tracks days and Nandos....

.... After the track days.

Yeah I know for a fact it’ll go straight on ebay after christmas if it isn’t returned, which I think is more offensive than just saying I’ll pay the extra to get a nice one now. It sucks because the thought is there and it’s nice.

I actually have got a couple track days off them for the same reason haha.

Yeah, my parents usually give me gift cards related to my interests if I don’t specify anything.

As an aside, do you want the Shield K1 or the upcoming Shield X1?

I go back to when I wanted the vibrating football game and they got me one where you lay templates on a light box - offense/defense 0ffense/defense. Even when you make your wishes clear people can make a mistake.

Spent more than a few Christmases with my buddy Eric in Arkansas. Every year we’d go to Barnes & Noble - I’d pick out the CD/DVD I wanted, so would he, we’d get gifts for everyone else, and then we’d act surprised at the gift exchange. “How did you know I wanted Cecilia Bartoli singing French songs?” “How did you know I wanted George Thorogood’s Greatest Hits?” And we were never busted.

Mmmmm, Nandos... I’ve got this one friend who isn’t keen on the food there, so I don’t get the opportunity to go nearly often enough.

My rule on technology purchases - though, thankfully, my family pretty much started doing it without having to be asked - is, if you’re feeling kind enough to buy me some fancy gadgetry, just let me pick it out myself.

Hence, I know exactly what flavour of Kindle I’ll be getting for Christmas this year - needed a new one to replace the one I accidentally sat on at Gamescom (don’t keep a uncased Kindle in your back pocket) - and whether it’ll have ads or not.

My family do this all the time. They’ll say “we know you’ll like it because you’ve said several times you like this”, to find it’s nothing even remotely connected to what I like or ever talked about. I tend to keep things for a year or two just in case someone says something and wants to see it (goodness knows why) and then I’ll take them all down to the charity shop at the end of the street.

Sometimes I wish they’d just say “what are you running low on with your car stuff?” and then I can say “well I could do with some Migliore QD or Adam’s H20 Gloss guard, etc...). You know, something not expensive that I could and will use.

Anything electrical or technology wise I put a halt to as fast as I can if I even suspect they will get something or that nature.

Usually I say exactly what I want but being that even decent budget tablets are >£100 I didn’t ask for one because that’s way more than they usually spend. They apparently decided that since I’d mentioned getting one and they could get one sub £50 that it would be great. I appreciate the thought but you don’t get a good tablet for £44 (bearing in mind that also includes headphones and a keyboard case). I found the actual tablet for £26 on amazon.

Yeah haha, I couldn’t stretch to anything like that. The one I actually wanted was about £150, so a fair bit less than the surface.

Yeah and I understand it because gift buying is hard. I’m not big on christmas to be honest so the whole thing is alien to me. I appreciate the good intentions but it just seems like a real faff.

I can literally show someone the thing I want for Xmas when they ask, even with a serial number and I get something else. I am to the point of give me cash, or just don’t ask me at all.

My mother asked one year if I wanted a tablet (we hadn’t mentioned christmas, it was one of those conversations that come up when your watching tv and an advert comes on). I said I’d rather have a laptop to which my mother just said “well if you have a look for one around £200 that you like. We’ll get you it for christmas”. When I said even a half decent small laptop would be £300+, her face just sank.

This year I’ve said there are a couple of things I want from Superskoda that I’d like.

I hear you. My brother is wanting to get himself a new laptop. I suggested a Surface Pro, but they are more than what he wants to pay. Now I get to hunt for something that costs less, but isn’t crap.

About 6 years into our 11 year relationship, the SigOther and I agreed not to exchange gifts at Christmas, or on our birthdays. Xmas, no go - B-day we take the other one to a restaurant they’ve never experienced. Except we’re behind - I think she owes me two and I owe her maybe ... three? Got to get her out for at least the first one.

My wife and I do something similar. Although we don’t even go out to eat since I’m a pretty decent cook. I just find it silly buying presents for any adult who has a job. If I want something, I'll go buy it. I don't want someone else have to waste their money on a gift.

I did bend the rules to get her a Toho-approved Gojira vinyl (the ‘correct’ 1954 version) for our 10th. And yeah - so much better to cook yourself - did Turkey Prince Orloff for us and two guests last night:

ASUS. $400-ish ASUS laptops punch far above their weight class.

I keep thinking Asus. I’m fed up with Dell and Lenovo for doing stupid things.
